Spandex Shorts: What Are They?

When you think of spandex shorts, you might get a painful flashback to the shiny, neon fashion fad best left in the ’80s. But they never really went away; they’ve just evolved to support us more quietly. So spandex shorts—what are they exactly? These are the facts.

What is spandex?

A chemist invented the synthetic fabric in 1958. “Spandex” is an anagram of “expands,” which is fitting. It can stretch up to eight times its original size and snap back. DuPont sells it under the brand name Lyrca, and today, it’s in most of our clothing in one blend or another. Consumers love that spandex can achieve a skin-tight fit with a compression effect but still remain comfortable.

Are Spandex shorts the same as…

Bicycle shorts?

Not exactly. They can be made of spandex, but these are designed with “leg gripper” rubbery bands to keep a cyclist’s shorts from riding up the leg. Sometimes they feature additional padding for longer workouts.

Compression shorts?

Not exactly. They can also be made of spandex, but compression shorts have a stiffer feel that provides pressure throughout the glutes, hamstrings, and quads. Their purpose is to increase circulation and blood oxygenation, to prevent strains and pulls, and to aid quicker muscle recovery.

What sports are they for?

Spandex shorts help make any activity more enjoyable. Spandex has moisture-wicking properties that are essential for everything from running to yoga. Their firm support and skin-tight fit ensure that your clothes never get in the way of your workout. Of course, they’re relaxing enough to wear when you want to do nothing, too.

Do you wear underwear with them?

Sometimes. Often spandex shorts that are designed for cycling and running have sewn-in crotch liners, so they can be worn alone. But you can layer bn3th underwear and other brands that have a snug fit and are invisible under shorts. They complement spandex shorts with their own specially-engineered technology that prevents shifting, adjusting, and trapped sweat.

At MK Socks, we have an appreciation for spandex shorts and what they’re doing for all levels of athletes. You need shorts, socks, and underwear you can depend on, so you can focus on performing at your peak. Browse our collections for gear that works as hard as you do.
